In this blog post I will be analysing some videos that are similar to ideas that I have.

The first video I will be analysing is a skatepark documentary in Nepal;

This video has a similar feel to the one I want to make for my idea at the skatepark. I really like this video as it has a really nice feel to the video. The emotion is portrayed very nicely in this video and you can see how passionate everyone in the project is about doing this. I like that the video shows the diversity of all of the people involved, you see the young children, the middle aged skateboarders and helpers and the elderly people who take their children to the skatepark. The video shows a good story of progression as you can see how the skatepark started as nothing and progressed into a thriving community for everyone to enjoy. I can take a lot from this video and put it into my video, such as the large variety of age ranges that speak and are involved in the video. I also really like the cinematography techniques used in this video as they really help portray the emotions in the video. I believe that this video was successful in motivating people to get out there and have fun with their lives because you never know how much time you have left. It also shows the viewer that there are always people out there that have it worse than you do. I think that this video promotes a healthy and happy lifestyle which is very good as a lot of people struggle with that these days.

All of the screenshots above show a variety of people from all around the world who came together to make this project possible. The camera angles for all of these interviews are really nice as the subject looks comfortable and doesn't look uneasy or uncomfortable. That is something that I would like to do in my video as I think it lets the viewer know that the subject isn't being forced to say anything they don't want to and that they are happy to be speaking their mind. My two favourite of the interview looks is the one just above and the second one from the top. The second one is nice as you can see the subjects skateboard which is nice as it lets you know that he actually does ride a skateboard and is there because he is passionate about what he does.

I also really like that there is a underlying tone of progression. In this story the progression is in the skatepark being built. As you can see from the pictures above the skatepark started as a mud hill and now it is an incredible looking skatepark with a large variety of ramps. I think that showing progression is very important in a video like this as it makes the viewer know that something is changing and that it is always good to progress. I would like to be able to show some sort of progression in my video, maybe by showing the skills that the subject has learnt at the skatepark teaching session. I believe that I can take a lot from this video and put it into my video and idea.

The next video I am going to be analysing is a documentary about one if the most famous/well-known skatepark in the world, SouthBank.

This is a longer documentary then the previous one, I do like this video but I feel as if the viewer loses attention through the duration of the video which isn't good as you always want to keep the audience intrigued. I really like the variation of the different types of footage in this video. It shows the history and the heritage of the skatepark which is what makes this place so special. This skatepark is world renowned for being compact and having very steep ramps which is perfect for skateboarding. I feel as if this video shows a lot more stories than the previous video. I feel as if this keeps the audience engaged as it is a constant change of scenery and face. The viewer will want to keep watching so that they can hear the stories of the speaker. The current style cinematography in this video is really good in this video as it shows how long the skatepark has been there as the camera quality has improved so much over the years. I prefer the wide range of camera techniques in this video than the previous one, I also prefer the range of people that spoke in this video but I did not enjoy the length of this video as you begin to loose concentration further in.

This video is very good at showing progression as well as it shows how the skatepark has developed since 1973. As you can see from the images above the camera quality has improved incredibly over 40 years. I really like that you are shown the history of the skatepark through historic clips from the archive. If I were to create a video in this style video I feel as if the target audience would be towards the children who would be likely to go to the skatepark as they are more likely to go on the internet and watch this video. As that is the target audience I would have to make the video less informal and more aesthetically pleasing.

The next video I am going to analyse is a fashion video/interview with Virgil Abloh;

I really like this video as the cinematography is really nice and very high quality. The camerawork is very nice and gives the video a cool feel. This documentary is a good length as it gives you all of the information you need to know but keeps is short and sweet. The information given is relevant and suitable. The style of video is something that I would like to recreate as it shows the artwork and clothing pieces. This is a really nice video that gives off a positive vibe towards the company and its designer. I think that the layout to the video is excellent as you see the whole process of the designs and see how the ideas are thought up. You also see the designers life out of the studio and in the real world which is something that most documentaries don't show. For the video to improve I think it would be nice if the video showed an interview with someone that works for OFF-WHITE and ask them what it's like to work with Virgil on designs and projects.

I think that this video is really nice as the camera work is very high quality, I like the graphics in the video as well as they are simple yet effective. I would like to have some graphics like this in my video just to introduce people and places to the viewer.

I also think that it is really effective to show a little bit of history in the videos. For example, in this video you are shown some clips of what I assume to be Virgil skateboarding in Chicago. I think that is makes the video a lot more appealing if you are able to see to history of something. I like how this video is structured as it gives you some information about the company then you see some background information about the owner/designer.

I really like the framing in this interview scene. You can see the subject very clearly (In focus) and some of his work/designs behind him (Out of focus). This creates a very aesthetically pleasing look to the video and I want to create a look like this for my video as it really intrigues the viewer by focusing on the subject and blurring out the background of the video. If I were to create a video in this style I believe that the target audience would be the people who are likely to buy the clothes, so in my mind that is older teenagers and people just in their 20's as that is who will be buying these kinds of clothes

The next video I will be analysing is a music video by A$AP Ferg;

The reason I chose this video is because there is lots of different editing techniques used. One of my 3 final ideas is to make a music video as I have made one before and I really enjoyed the experience. The only thing that was a nit upsetting about the video is that the client wanted it to be a simple video with no crazy editing or over the top styles. I think the video came out really well but it could've been better if we filmed something a little more fast paced. The reason I like this video is because it is so fast paced and it barely stays on this same shot for over 5 seconds. There are lots of fast cuts and transitions which makes the video stand out to me. I would like to make a music video with some qualities that this video has because I would like to see if I could create a music video that is as fast paced and exciting as this one.

I also like how different styles of camera were used. For example the image above is taken from the video and you can see that an old camera has been used as it is very grainy and you can tell that it isn't quite the same quality as other parts of the video.

As you can see from the shot above the camera quality is much better here. This shows that there is many different cameras used to film the video. It makes the video look really cool as there is lots of different styles in the video.

In summary I believe that I have a good opportunity to create each of these videos. I have experience filming some of these types of videos. I have the most experience with filming videos at the skatepark as that is where my passion for video making came from. I feel as if it would be best for me to play it safe and create the skatepark video for my FMP as I do not want to be out of my comfort zone in such a big project as I want this video to be the best I have ever created. I feel as if the fashion video is a good idea as it is something new and something that I am interested in. The music video is a last resort for me if nothing else goes to plan as I have made one recently and I would like to do something different for my FMP.
