Initial ideas analysis

In this blog post I am going to be talking about my initials ideas for my FMP;

I have outlined 4 of the main ideas that I believe are the best and most interesting ideas to go through with. Below I will analyse all 4 of them

The first idea I had was to create a music video. The reason this was the first idea I had is because I recently filmed a music video with a client through college. I absolutely loved the experience of filming the music video and I would love to do it again.

Strengths: I would get the opportunity to work with another creative artist and film something that I enjoy filming. Working with musicians is very good as they always have friends who create music as well so it is a good business venture as it could get my name put out there. It is a very big industry and people always know people. I could very easily get into the industry and become a well-known filmer of these kinds of videos.

Weaknesses: As I have filmed a music video before I will not be pushing myself much and I will be staying in my comfort zone. Although I do enjoy filming music videos and it is a good industry to get into but that is not what I set out to do. I've always wanted to be a videographer for everything and not just music videos and I feel as if I could get stuck in the industry as people may believe that I can only film music videos and nothing else. This is a downside of the music video industry.

Opportunities: Creating another music video would really help me to improve my music video producing skills. I could learn a lot about music producing and writing which may be helpful to get me even further into the music industry if I wanted to. Once I have my name in the industry it will be easy to get work between many different clients.

Threats: This idea is very easy for me to do and may make people think that I want an easy ride without having to push myself put of my comfort zone. Also, if a University looks at this video they may think that I am not very creative as it is a very easy thing to create/produce. Whereas if I made a narrative video or something like that then they may think that I have a very creative mindset and can think of many very good ideas for creative film productions.

The next idea I had was to create a promotional video for a company. This was my second idea as this is what I originally set out to do in the industry. I think that making a promotional video will be good as many companies want promotional videos to get their brand/company out there.

Strengths: I have never made a promotional video for company before and I think it will be a good experience and something that will push me out of my comfort zone. Similarly to the music industry many companies know other companies so of I create a video for one company then another company may get in tough with the first company and ask who created the video for them. It is a good way for me to get into the industry.

Weaknesses: I currently have no experience in the promotional video world and I do not want my Final Major Production to not be as good as it could be because I was trying too hard to push myself out of my comfort zone and into another market. I may also struggle to find a good company to create a promotional video for so that may be a big problem if I decide to go with this idea.

Opportunities: I could potentially have the opportunity to work with a very good company who could very easily get me into the promotional video market. I have 2 companies who I could very easily go to to create a video for. The first is my Dad's company which is very successful but it would be an easy option. The other company is Unit 1 Skatepark, I have been going to this skatepark for many years and would easily be able to convince the owner to allow me to make a promotional video for them.

Threats: If I decided to go with this idea I could be seen to be going with the easy option as I already know the companies I would make the video for. But then If I went on the search to find a company to make a video for I could easily get stuck if I couldn't find a good company to make the video for. It will be tough for me to get the job of making the promotional video for a random company as I have no experience of making promotional videos before so they may not trust me to make a video of this kind for them as it may not give off the correct image for their company.

The next idea I have is to create a narrative video. This was the third idea as this is what most people do for their final major project. I haven't really done a proper narrative video before but I feel like it could work well.

Strengths: I feel like I have full control over this idea as there are no boundaries for a narrative videos. I could create a very different video to anything I have ever done before, I have full control over this project and can do anything I want to. I have lots of ideas that I could put forward for this idea which is good as I can create anything I want to.

Weaknesses: Although I have lots of ideas I do not feel as if they will be as special as some of my other ideas. I feel like a narrative video is the most basic idea for a Final Major Project, so I would prefer to do something other than a narrative video. Also, I have not created a full narrative video before so it could be risky to film a video like that as it is out of my comfort zone and the Final Major Project is very important and I do not want to create a bad video.

Opportunities: This project gives me an opportunity to create a very inventive video and to potentially work with some very special people. I have the opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone. I may also get to go to some very nice locations to film this video.

Threats: The threats for this project are that I will be pushing myself out of my comfort zone which may not be a good idea for such a important project. I need to make sure that this video is the best video I can make and I do not know if I will be able to do that with this ideas. I also don't want to be a simple student who creates a typical narrative video.

My final idea is to create a video for a fashion brand/company. I feel like this is the best idea as I am very into fashion and style. I feel as if I can make a really good video for this idea and create a really special project.

Strengths: I am really into fashion and design, I believe that I could make a really good video out of this as it is something that I am passionate about. I know someone who is starting his own clothing company and he is an excellent designer. I feel as if we could work together and create a really nice video presenting and showcasing his work and designs. It could be a great project as it is something that both of us are passionate about.

Weaknesses: I have only created a interview kind of video once and it wasn't the best of videos as I scripted the interview and it didn't seem genuine but I have learnt from my mistakes and I need to ask the questions and get them to answer the question in their own words as it makes the interview a lot more believable.

Opportunities: I have the opportunity to work with a designer and producer which could be really cool and it could help get my name out there. Some scenes in fashion are very demanding for videography work such as streetwear and high end fashion and runway shows.

Threats: The threats for this idea are that I may not be able to showcase my subjects clothing range as he wants it to be. I feel as if I could potentially give off the wrong vibe for his clothing line but I feel that it would be hard to do that as I just need to give it a clean look.

In summary I believe that I have the opportunity to create some very impressive videos for my Final Major Project. I feel that the final idea is the best as it is something different but could still turn out really well. I feel as if I could do really well in this project as I have some good ideas. I believe that my final idea has the most potential to be unique and different and I already have someone in mind who I can film the video for. If I cannot get this subject to make a video with me then I will move on to one of my other ideas. My next go to idea will probably be the music video as I really enjoyed filming the one I done recently, I will either try and film another one for the same subject I used before or I will try and get another client to create a music video for. If I can't do that then I will go to the narrative video and if I can't think of anything to do for that then I will create a promotional video for a company.
