Music video analysis

In this blog post I will be talking about a video that our client told us that he liked the idea of;

The video is for the song "27 by Passenger". This is a well known song as it has over 2 million views on Youtube. I have watched the video a few times to get a feel for the camerawork and acting in the video.

The video starts with a shot of the band's album cover;

This is something that we could do in our clients video as it lets the viewer instantly know that they have other music that you can watch/listen to. That is an easy way to promote other work that the artist has done.

The next shot shows the front of a recording studio with a graphic that says "Passenger in 27"

I also think that this is a good thing to put in a music video as it really emphasises the song name so that someone watching the video won't forget the name of the song they are watching. I that Callie will be able to do this as she is good at creating graphics and fonts.

The video shows the singer walking through an old-school street and as he sings the lyrics things happen in the video that correlate. For example, He sings the lyrics "Don't want the devil to be taking my soul" and a little boy is standing at the side of the road in a devils costume.

This is very effective as it makes the video work perfectly with the song.

He then says "Write songs that come straight from the heart," when he says this a big heart runs up to him and grabs him

I think that we should try and do something like this in our video. At the moment we have not heard the song but when we get it we will analyse the lyrics and try to plan some visuals to work with the lyrics.

Further into the video he is still walking down the street but the song becomes more rhythmic and the already busy singer is joined by a group of dancers who clap along to the beat.

This is a good part of the video as it makes it very uplifting to see the dancers smiling. I feel like we might be able to get something like this in our video but we will not be able to get as many people in our video.

At 1:16 there is a swish/whip pan, this is a fast transition that looks seamless in the video.

We may be able to implement something like this in our video as it is an effective way to transition between locations.

The rest of the video continues in the same style of things happening that are in relation to what is being sung. This makes the video very effective as you can visualise what is happening as you are listening.

Overall, I think that this is a good video that portrays the lyrics well and is a very visually pleasing video as it is filmed well and the colour grading gives off a happy vibe. I hope to give off the same feeling from our video, if we manage to do that I feel like we have succeeded in making a professional looking music video.
