Year 1: In the first year of my 5 year plan I want to stay on the college course as it is very educational for me as I am learning a lot about media and the media industry. As the course gets further through the year I will begin to look at the next step which is university. In some of my spare days off of college I will try to get work experience with an media company, I have already completed work experience with a media company called ‘Wildwood Media’ which create videos for companies such as the NHS and Kent County Council and the owner of the company has already invited me back to complete some more work for him at a big road safety event he organised. I will also be applying to ucas to try and get a place in the university that I want to go to.

Year 2: There are two ways I can go from this year. The first way I can go is to a full time job. This is a very tough way to start out as I will not have the education that others who have been to university will do but I am very passionate about media and would work very hard for any media company I got a job at. If I work very hard for Wildwood Media I could potentially get a job in the media industry. Once I got a job in the media industry I would keep the job for as long as I could because I think I will always be passionate about media. The other pathway is to go to university to extend my knowledge in the industry of media. But I think that I would learn more in 1 year of work than I would in 3-4 years in university. If I went to university I would study a media filled course that involves video production, editing and cinematography. The university that is standing out to me in the university of Bournemouth because the course looks ideal for what I want to do in the future.

Year 3: If I were to get a job at a media company I would still try to keep my job at that place as it would be the best place for me to be. Whereas if I was at university I would be continuing on the course that I had applied for. While I am university I would be constantly looking for jobs to do once I have finished the course. I may even get some potential part time work to do while I am completing the course.

Year 4: This year would be very similar to year 3 as I would either still be at my media job or even at university still studying video and media. But I would also be looking a lot harder for any jobs going in the industry.

Year 5: This is one of the most important year as I have to really work hard as I need to either keep my job at the media company or I need to be looking desperately for any media jobs. Another idea that I had was to potentially look into business ownership as I could potentially begin my own business as I would have a lot of experience behind the camera. If I were to begin my own company It would be a freelance videography company and anyone could hire me to film on any site or set. I have a lot of knowledge in business as my father runs his own business and I could get a lot of tips from him.

Chris Newberry owner of Wildwood Media.

Chris went to Midkent College and completed a 1 year course in GNVQ Media studies and then a two year course in BTEC Media studies. He went onto the University of Creative Arts at the Farnham campus. He studied there for 3 years and received a degree for Film and Video production (BA Hons).

During his time Chris has completed a lot of work experience for multiple film sets. Whilst he was at University he created many videos with his friends.

His first media job was for a corporate company called Lavender Blue Media. After leaving that job for personal reason he became the Audio/Visual manager for Kent fire and rescue service for just under 10 years. He filmed incidents for the Fire Service for training and evidence purposes. Now he films corporate, promotional and educational films. He has continued to make his own personal films, including ones for the national lottery fund (BFI).

He started his own company so that he was in complete control of the work that was created as he knows how a video should be put together for a certain target audience. After gaining 17 years in the industry he knew it was time for him to make his dream come true, to own his own media business. His company is now in its 3rd year of production. Chris claimed that it was the hardest yet best thing he has ever done. He still tries to create his own narrative videos when he can find the time.
